Framework of the Information Support Project

The Project's Vision

The Information Support Project supports the vision of the Southeast Asia's Indigenous Fallow Management (SEA-IFM) Network which was established in 1997.  The vision of the SEA-IFM Network is to build a community of researchers, extensionists, educators, and policymakers engaged in addressing the need to alleviate poverty among upland farming communities through building more sustainable farming systems in areas where shifting cultivation is practiced.

The Establishment of SEA-IFM Network

In 1997, a workshop on the intensification of shifting cultivation in South East Asia, convened in Bogor.  This workshop focused on how to address the problems and needs of upland communities practicing shifting cultivation who are among the poorest and most disadvantaged in the region.

Strong interest among the workshop participants to create a mechanism for more effective exchange of technical information, methods, and policy outputs, that address the pressing needs of upland communities.

Indigenous Fallow Management (IFM) network was initiated to facilitate the exchange of information about research and development efforts on fallow management in the region.

The core countries of the network are the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and Laos.
