Satoyama conference at the World Agroforestry Centre

The World Agroforestry Centre has the pleasure of hosting the third committee meeting and general assembly of the International Partnership for Satoyama Initiative (IPSI) from 12-14 March 2012. The Centre has been among the first members to IPSI since the COP10 meeting in Nagoya, Japan in October 2010.

Satoyama is a Japanese term given to the type of agriculture that makes use of arable lands in steep mountainous regions.

Satoyama agricultural practice has been around for many centuries but in recent times it is being seen as a possible strategy for biodiversity conservation. IPSI aims to conserve environments that are shared by wildlife as well as by small farming communities in Japan and its surrounding regions. These environments are called Socio-Ecological Production Landscapes (SEPL).

The conference will seek to capture positive SEPL experiences as well as discover creative ways of promoting resilience within SEPLs. Conference organizers hope it will also lead to revitalizing the local communities by empowering the young and by making use of local knowledge.
