The World Agroforestry Centre at Planet Under Pressure

Planet under Pressure is an international conference focusing on solutions to the global sustainability challenge. The research community has a responsibility to provide the knowledge needed to move society towards effective stewardship of the planet. Scientists have a duty to communicate the urgency of this challenge to society. But science alone is not enough. The 2012 Planet Under Pressure conference is intended to be a major opportunity to link global-change science in a two-way engagement with the wide range of other stakeholders working towards global sustainability

The World Agroforestry Centre will be represented by Henry Neufeldt who will participate in the poster-session, Reducing Subsistence Farmers' Vulnerability to Climate Change: Evaluating the Potential Contributions of Agroforestry in Western Kenya. The poster will explore whether and, how agroforestry techniques can help subsistence farmers reduce their vulnerability to climate change. The session will be held jointly with Tannis Thorlakson from Harvard University.

On the 29th of March, there will be a session on Building Capacity For Climate Change Adaptation And Poverty Alleviation: The Role Of Social Protection

This session explores the possibilities of using social protection to build resilience to climate change, addressing the following questions: How has social protection been used to reduce risk and vulnerability to climate change? What are the methodological challenges of targeting the most vulnerable? What kinds of policies need to be in place to build resilience over the next century?

During the session, the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) will be presenting a paper on “Linking Social Protection and Adaptive Capacity to Minimize Risk of Drought through Agroforestry while  Moushumi Chaudhury ,CCAFS Science Officer will be presenting the a paper 'Climate change adaptation and social protection in agricultural systems: case studies from Zambia and Honduras'.

The CGIAR as a whole will have a significant footprint in next week's conference. CLICK here for a summary of events by CGIAR at Planet Under Pressure.
