Superior fruit trees in the Philippines

Central Luzon State University is seeking to establish a permanent and large-scale source of planting materials of high-value fruit trees, reports The Philippine Star.

The trees will be propagated using multiple rootstock technology being promoted by renowned pomologist (fruit tree scientist) Bernie Dizon. He is growing a wide range of fruit trees, including Longkong lanzones, latex-less jackfruit, guyabano, Davao pomelo and assorted species of mangoes.

Dizon says the success of the fruit trees – many of which bore fruits after just one year - will leave a lasting legacy to the university. The project is expected to provide tremendous benefit to farmers throughout the Philippines

Victor Ramos, Secretary in the Department of Environment and Natural Resources praised Dizon for his work on an “agroforestry project showcasing high-value fruit trees and a learning center for government technicians and farmers.”
