Project to improve coastal landscape management in Ghana

Coastal districts in the Western Region of Ghana are set to benefit from a US $3.3 million US-funded project aimed at strengthening capacity for low emissions development through improved coastal forest landscape management.

An article in Modern Ghana reports that the project will include implementing agroforestry and forestry practices, short and medium term livelihood improvement activities, bee keeping expansion, increased vegetable production and the establishment of woodlots for charcoal production.

The 3-year Coastal Sustainable Landscapes project is being funded by the United States Agency for International Development (US AID) and will be implemented in 17 communities in 6 districts.

“The project is embedded within broader and multi-partner food security, biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation and environmental governance efforts in the six coastal districts,” said Dr Dennison, director of the project.

The project will be expanded to 23 other communities in conjunction with the non-governmental organization, Hen Mpoano.
