Improving refugee environments through agroforestry

Agroforestry is being used to protect the environment in and around 4 refugee camps in Rwanda.

An article The New Times reports how the initiative of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs (MIDIMAR) will involve forestry and agroforestry, education about environmental management, forest landscape restoration, constructing terraces and distributing 14,000 modern cooking stoves to curb air pollution and deforestation.

People living around the Gihembe refugee camp have been concerned about erosion and landslides, one of which has killed a resident.

The 2-year, Rwf1.5 billion (US $2 million) project will be implemented in the following camps: Gihembe in Gicumbi District, Kiziba in Karongi District, Nyabiheke in Gatsibo District and Mugombwa in Gisagara District.
