Scientists from the World Agroforestry Centre hosted and participated in a range of events as part of the UN climate change talks (COP20) in Lima, Peru in December 2014.
The Centre aimed to highlight the value of agroforestry systems in both climate change mitigation and adaptation during the conference through the following messages:
- Agroforestry systems are more resilient to climate variability than other agricultural systems and should therefore be included in future climate conventions.
- Climate-smart landscapes can achieve multiple beneficial climate, social, development and environmental outcomes.
- Climate-smart agriculture addresses food security, nutritional security, adaptation and mitigation within one framework with agroforestry often being a good solution.
- Climate finance can provide livelihood gains to farmers with both climate-change and adaptation benefits.
- Developing countries need to put in place policies that promote climate mitigation and adaptation practices that benefit smallholder farmers and provide environmental and social benefits for all.

The Global Landscapes Forum, in which the World Agroforestry Centre was a partner, was held from 6-7 December. It attracted more than 1,700 participants from 90 countries, including 14 Ministers and Vice Ministers and a former President.
The forum provides a platform for positioning landscapes in the new international agreements on climate and sustainable development. Landscapes approaches are increasingly being considered as an effective way to balance multiple environmental and livelihood objectives in land management and decision making.
The 2015 Global Landscapes Forum will be held in Paris, France on 6 December.
