“Climate change is a cross-cutting issue contributing to development issues and should be addressed by all stakeholders.” Says Rebecca Tanui, the training coordinator of a workshop that took place in western Kenya. The workshop was possible thanks to a partnership between Building East Africa Community Network (BEACON) and civil society groups.
The workshop brought together more than 50 self-help group leaders from Kakamega, Kisumu, Siaya, all the way through Trans Nzoia and Uasin Gishu counties in Western Kenya.
During the four day workshop on conserving the environment and improving food security, participants learned about the effects of climate change on agriculture and food security. Farmers everywhere are beginning to notice the unusual timing of rains and fluctuating temperatures. They are worried by the affects these changing are having on the planting and harvesting seasons.
All participants were grateful for a timely workshop filled with practical ideas on how to beat famine and protect water catchment areas through such practices as agroforestry.
