The growing popularity of macadamia trees among farmers in Viet Nam’s Central Highlands is the subject of an article in Bao Moi.
Traditionally a coffee, pepper and cashew growing area, more and more macadamia trees are being cultivated in the Central Highlands as farmers see the benefits. These include a stable income from a tree that will yield fruit for up to 60 years. Krong Nang District in Dak Lak province now has over 17,800 seedlings and this number is set to increase.
Macadamia trees were introduced into Viet Nam in 2002 for trial cultivation. While the trees grow well under local conditions, production is “scattered with low crop yield and quality remains poor in comparison to international standards,” says the article.
Over the next 5 years, Him Lam JSC together with LienVietPostBank will invest VND20 trillion ($935 million) in developing macadamia with local farmers in Viet Nam.
