In an address to young people, Ugandan President, Yoweri Museveni, called on them to plant trees of economic benefit that would also protect the country’s environment.
Musevini was speaking at a gathering of members of the Youth-Go-Green-Campaign which has set itself the mission of planting one million trees each year along Uganda’s national corridors in conjunction with the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA).
An article in the Uganda Media Centre reports that, in his address, the President outlined factors threatening Uganda’s environment, including greenhouse gas emissions, the drying of wetlands, cutting of trees near lake shores, overgrazing, cultivation on hillsides and bush burning.
In addition to encouraging people to plant more trees, he encouraged them to adopt agricultural practices such as contour farming on hillsides and mulching, to combat soil erosion.
“Tea, olives, dates and mulberry, among other trees, offer economic value,” said Museveni, “those trees also contribute to the national efforts geared to the protection and conservation of our environment”.
