Dozens of fires are blazing in a peat swamp in Aceh, in the north of Sumatra, Indonesia, according to the environmental website, redd-monitor.org.
The Tripa peat swamp was the site of a study carried out by the World Agroforestry Centre in 2010, in collaboration with PanEco and Yayasan Ekosistem Lestari, to assess ecosystem services and options for human livelihoods provided by the remaining habitat of the Sumatran orangutan outside the Gunung Leuser National Park.
The report, available for download here, provides biophysical and socio-economic background to the issues discussed in the article on redd-monitor.org.
In brief, we used a rapid analysis method to assess carbon stocks and calculated the net present value of important crop and tree commodities, analysing the costs and benefits of each commodity. These were vital to understanding what was driving the changes to the environment and whether a carbon market valuation could provide a realistic economic alternative.
To find solutions for better management at the two study sites, we compared several possible scenarios and attempted to translate these scenarios into opportunities for human livelihoods, orangutan population size and carbon emissions and stocks.
