Trees for girls in India

Every time a baby girl is born in the village of Piplantri in Rajasthan, India, the community celebrates by planting 111 trees.

An article in One Green Planet explains how for most Indian villages, the birth of a daughter is considered a burden for the family. However in Piplantri, when a girl is born, the family and villagers raise a sort of ‘trust’ for the girl which is set aside for 20 years, ensuring the girl will never be considered a financial burden for her parents.

In return for the trust, the parents sign a legal affidavit stating that the daughter will only be married after she reaches the age of 18 and receives a proper education, and that the 111 trees will be taken care of.

In the past 6 years, a quarter of a million trees have been planted in Piplantri, helping to ensure the local environment will be able to support the increasing population.
