CNN has produced 3 short documentaries about the environmental transformation which has occurred in the region of Tigray in the northern highlands of Ethiopia, and how beekeeping is benefitting local farmers.
Deforestation and drought had left Tigray severely degraded, but now thanks to the work of several NGOs, land has been reclaimed and forest area increased. This has brought new opportunities for farmers, especially in beekeeping.
Farmers interviewed in the documentaries explain how harvesting honey is earning them income which they can use to buy goats and cattle and send their children to school.
Tigray is a priority area for the World Agroforestry Centre in Ethiopia and Centre scientists are working closely with many of the organizations and farmers interviewed in the documentaries.
