A blog post on the Clinton Foundation’s website tells the story of Timote Georges who, through the Smallholder Farmers Alliance, is promoting agroforestry to both restore tree cover in Haiti and improve agricultural techniques.
With support from Timberland, the Alliance now boasts 2,000 members in an agroforestry cooperative. Eight nurseries have been created and 2.2 million trees planted. Through using better quality planting material and training, farmers have “increased their crop yields by as much as 50 percent,” says Georges.
The Alliance is now working with the Clinton Foundation to further expand its cooperatives to become a commercially sustainable enterprise. This will enable farmers to market their products while they continue to produce in quantities and quality.
