Solar stoves and agroforestry in Dominican Republic

Care2 reports on work by The Nature Conservancy to improve the livelihoods of people in the Dominican Republic, including an innovative agroforestry project that has helped villagers to plant fruit trees as a sustainable food and income source and fast growing woody trees to provide fuel.

The focus of the story is on a project to provide solar ovens to communities on the border of Haiti and the Dominican Republic and the edge of the Sabana Clara Forest Reserve. The stoves prevent villagers from having to gather wood for cooking from the forest reserve. On cloudy days, the families use energy-efficient stoves that use less wood.
