A push for agroforestry in Punjab

Indians are being encouraged to usher in an ‘Evergreen Revolution’ by planting more trees to make the country clean, green and pollution free and to benefit farmers through agroforestry.

The Pioneer reports on a call by the Chief Minister of Punjab State, Parkash Singh Badal, for at least one tree to be planted every time a child is born. He outlined how planting trees should become a mass movement to protect the environment and maintain ecological balance.

Badal said agroforestry was especially important at a time when Punjab’s traditional agriculture has already reached a point of saturation.

The Punjab Government has committed to increasing the area under agroforestry from existing 6.3 per cent to 15 per cent in coming years. To realize this goal, the ‘Greening Punjab Mission’ has established nurseries that will provide quality seedlings to farmers.
