Public private partnership for global conservation

Conservation International (CI) and Daikin Industries, a leading Japanese multinational air conditioning company, are partnering to help preserve 6 critical forest ecosystems across the globe.

Biz Wire Express reports that the partnership will focus on forest conservation and environmental education activities to foster sustainable livelihoods on a global scale.

Daikin is investing US$4.5 million in the partnership for 10 years, funding CI initiatives in Brazil, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia and Liberia.

In Southwest China, agroforestry will be promoted in key mountainous areas to create more diverse, productive, profitable and sustainable land-use systems.

In Liberia, efforts will focus on reducing human pressures on the Guinean Forests of Western Africa through creating diversified livelihood options for rural communities. These will include agroforestry and ecotourism.

“This type of investment really exemplifies what leading corporations are capable of executing when they take an interest and a responsibility in safeguarding our natural resources,” said David Emmett, senior vice president of CI’s Asia-Pacific Field Division.

CI and Daikin began working together in 2008 on a reforestation project in Indonesia’s Gunung Gede-Pangrango National Park to protect wildlife and safegruard clean water.
