Nigerians have been called on to support the Great Green Wall initiative to combat desertification in the north of the country, reports an article in the Daily Trust, Nigeria.
Goni Ahmed, Director General, National Agency for Great Green Wall (NAGGW), explained how desertification has drastically affected quality of life in northern Nigeria. It has led to high levels of migration, instability, low productivity and limited economic growth.
The Great Green Wall initiative was initially planned as a revegetated strip of land stretching from Djibouti in the east of Africa to Dakar in the west. It now involves 11 countries working together to not only plant trees but also address productivity in crop, livestock and forest landscapes.
Goni outlined various aspects of the project that require support from stakeholders, including nursery rehabilitation, shelterbelt establishment, sand dune stabilization, agroforestry, farmer managed natural regeneration and integrated water and natural resources management.
