Linking monitoring with decision-making in development

The World Agroforestry Centre has led the development of a review into 20 years of monitoring initiatives in sustainable agriculture.

The review is intended to guide future investments by the UK Department for International Development relating to the sustainable intensification of agriculture. It provides insights and tools to help stakeholders improve such system by prioritizing investments and managing competing development goals.

An article on the UK Government’s website, says the review analyses key questions currently facing stakeholder, such as: how to evaluate alternative research and development strategies in terms of their potential impact on productivity, environmental services and welfare goals, including trade-offs among these goals; and how to cost-effectively measure and monitor actual effectiveness of interventions and general progress towards achieving sustainable development objectives?

The review found that there was a surprising lack of evidence for the impact of monitoring initiatives on decision-making and management. It provides recommendations for good practice in monitoring initiatives.
