A landscape approach through REDD+

Evidence for a landscape approach to tackling the multiple issues of biodiversity, climate change and agriculture is mounting.

A post on the blog of the Landscapes for People, Food and Nature Initiative looks at some of the recent developments that support such an approach, particularly in relation to Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+).

REDD+ may be viewed as an ideal opportunity for cross-sectoral collaboration but the recent UN climate talks saw slow progress in this area, with countries failing to agree on how to verify emissions reductions and methods for compensation. Ravi Prabhu, Deputy Director General, Research at the World Agroforestry Centre believes the whole mosaic of a landscape must be considered in carbon measurements.

The CGIAR report, Going from Red to Green: the Landscape Approach highlights how trade-offs between multiple objectives of food security, energy, economic development and conservation can be better managed with a unified approach.

The blog post incorporates a short video in which Tony Simons, Director General of the World Agroforestry Centre, gives an overview of the value of a whole landscapes approach beyond REDD.
