Land use changes needed to improve water quality in Tanzania

Sedimentation and turbidity in the Zigi River in Tanzania is increasing, but measures such as agroforestry, bench terraces, grass stripping and other soil and water conservation practices can help improve water quality.

All Africa reports on the findings of a hydrological study that was released during a workshop in Tanga Region looking at Equitable Payment for Watershed Services (EPWS) as a concept and tool to respond to the problem.

It is believed that unsustainable land use upstream has caused erosion and landslides which are decreasing the capacity of the downstream Mabayani reservoir.

“Upstream communities have showed commitment and engagement in sustainable land use practices and stopping subsistence agriculture, which threatens downstream water users,” says the article.
