Smallholder farmers in the Philippine province of Quirino will benefit from new livelihood activities, including agroforestry, as part of a project funded by the Korean Government.
The Philippine Information Agency reports that the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) is providing US $5 million to introduce improved farming technologies for agroforestry, establish farm-to-market roads, provide microfinance, equipment and materials, and build capacity of project implementers and beneficiaries.
Overall the project aims to contribute to poverty alleviation in the province through introducing new crops that can improve farm income, rehabilitating watershed areas and extending microfinance to farmers.
Farmers involved in the agroforestry component of the project will receive high quality fruit tree seedlings and fertilizer to develop fruit tree gardens.
An agroforestry model farm will also be established in the provincial capital, Cabarroguis for education and training.
