Keeping Wangari Maathai’s vision alive

Earth Day – held on 22 April each year – provides an opportunity to celebrate and build on the vision created by Wangari Maathai, writes David Kayondo in an article on the website, Next Billion.

Maathai’s incredible achievements through the Green Belt Movement, aimed at eradicating poverty through environmental conservation, were “more about human regeneration” says Kayondo. Her work has helped shape new models of social investment; providing farmers with opportunities to diversity and expand their activities, such as through agroforestry.

GBM has been able to advance “conservation, people and ideas” in order to mobilize capital to create social progress. The organization has also been successful in engaging youth in addressing environmental challenges.
