Israel offers agroforestry support to Philippines

Israel has offered to support the Philippines in further developing agroforestry through training students, farmers and agriculturists in mechanized farming technology that can be used on terraced farms.

Manila Standard Today reports on a recent visit by Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines, Ephraim Ben Matityau, to La Trinidad, where he offered to establish links with Benguet State University (BSU).

A previous partnership between BSU and Israeli company, Plastro Project, introduced a drip irrigation system in the province.

Matityau spoke about how agroforestry technologies, such as planting fruit-bearing trees on mountainsides, could help to control erosion. He added that farmers can also be trained to increase production through the use of organic fertilizers.

“We want to provide today’s generation with optimum knowledge and exposure to countries with proven track records on agriculture development like Israel so that our farming communities will be able to cope with prevailing trends,” said Dr. Ben Ladilad, BSU president
