Institute empowers women in Senegal

An award-winning research institution in Senegal is training women farmers, helping them to diversify and add value to a range of agricultural products.

An article in the Business Times explains how the Senegalese Institute of Food Technology (ITA) provides training to female grain and fruit farmers so that they can add value to their products and earn a better living. The institute also conducts research on sustainable products resistant to climate fluctuations.

ITA trains over 100 women farmers every year in quality standards and technology for food processing; strengthening the economic power of women in Senegal. It also helps women’s associations to develop and professionalize small-scale food processing, while offering women a vital source of income.

In the fruit sector, ITA together is training women in processing and marketing so that they can make value-added products from locally-grown fruit, such as juices, jams and syrups.
