“Wherever there is land, there should be greenery," say officials in the state of Maharashtra in the west of India.
The government is devising a new social forestry policy to increase green cover in the state through a range of measures, including agroforestry, community forestry, village parks, urban forestry and beautification of industrial areas.
In Maharashtra, forest land currently constitutes about 20 per cent of land area but the state is aiming for green cover on 80 per cent of non-forest areas.
