Rwanda’s efforts to balance its increasing population with protection of natural resources are reported in a release from KT Press.
"As we look forward to development, we are not making a choice between environment and prosperity, but rather how do we combine both because one supports the other," said President Paul Kagame during the recent World Economic Forum in Davos.
The press release outlines how the Government of Rwanda has put in place policies for environmental conservation aimed at propelling the country's green growth over the next 5 years.
Significant achievements have already been made, including the planting of more than 30 million trees in 2014 as part of agroforestry and reforestation programs.
Such moves are aimed at reversing the serious depletion of natural resources that has occurred in Rwanda in the past and led to problems such as erosion, water pollution and loss of biodiversity.
The Fund for the Environment and Climate Change, launched in 2015, aims to mobilize and channel domestic and international finance to public and private projects that work towards a green economy. It is hoped that by 2030, 5,000 green jobs will be created and significant reductions made in greenhouse gas emissions.
