GCARD 2: time to rethink our approach to agriculture

How effective are the numerous scientific models, strategies and policies aimed at gearing agriculture to meet the challenges of global warming? asks an article in the Observer, reporting on the second Global Conference on Agricultural Research and Development (GCARD2) held in Punta del Este, Uruguay.

The author calls for clear goals and targets to be developed and for all - civil society actors, scientists, agro-economists, farmers, policymakers and the media – to influence policy changes on agriculture and the environment.

“We need to demarcate production zones within rural areas for large-scale fruit production, horticulture, dairy farming and agroforestry,” thereby supporting family farm production.

There is also a need to develop or adopt technologies to manage production systems while maintaining their productivity and competitiveness.

The GCARD2 meeting is an opportunity to rethink priorities and partnerships on agriculture and climate issues and look at issues through a different lens.
