In promoting agroforestry, the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) announced it will provide support for marketing casuarina trees and help provide bio-fertilizers.
There are an estimated 32 million acres of forest surrounding farmers’ field in India. Now there are moves to increase tree cover to improve food security and water security, and to provide better technology transfer to farmers.
The Hindu reports that there are around 145 trees with domestic value that could be “cultivated extensively to improve forest cover and to provide income”. It says there is a need to start community seed orchards to improve agroforestry.
