Agroforestry systems may be preferred sites for foraging as they combine domesticated and wild species in close proximity, says a new ‘Update’ from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
The website of the International Institute for Sustainable Development reports that FAO has published the Non-Wood Forest Products (NWFP) 'Update' which focuses on the foraging of plants both within and outside forests.
The Update looks at the role of foraging in maintaining food diversity and the important nutritional contribution of foraged foods, especially for children and youth. It draws on articles from a number of institutions, including that profiling work by the World Agroforestry Centre into the value of wild indigenous fruit trees.
