An e?discussion on “Developing capacities for sustainable change: Definitions, key terms and concepts” kicked off on 1 August 2014.
The discussion runs for 4 weeks, concluding on 22 August, and participation is open to everyone, via registration.
The discussion aims to involve who are developing capacities across agricultural innovation systems, and will seek to highlight effective ways of transforming research outputs into development outcomes.
The discussion will revolve around three framing questions related to capacity development:
- What are the differences, if any, in meaning, substance and implications of the terms Capacity Building, Capacity Development, and Capacity Strengthening?
- What implications do these concepts have for different theories of change which guide agricultural innovation systems, where research is only one aspect of the system? Would different indicators be needed for capturing the outcomes from these three divergent concepts?
- Which global trends and uncertainties may influence how capacity development is framed in the international agricultural development agenda over the next 5-10 years?
The final week of the e-discussion will identify areas of consensus and those needing further dialogue.
World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is acting as a co-convenor of the e-discussion, alongside Capacity.org and ILRI, under the auspices of the recently launched CGIAR Capacity Development Community of Practice.
The e-discussion is the first in a planned series, and the convenors welcome all those with an interest in developing capacities across agricultural innovation systems worldwide to enrich the debate.
