Could Africa help feed the world?

Africa offers “major solutions in feeding the world,” according to an article in DevEx which outlines some examples of what can be, and is being, done to improve food production and distribution in Africa.

The global population is expected to increase to more than 9 billion people by 2050, making it necessary to produce a whole lot more food. In Africa, the population is projected to increase from its current 15 per cent of the world population to 25 per cent in 2050.

The article outlines some initiatives that are already achieving successes in the areas of:

  1. Substantially increasing yields using current technology, such as higher quality farm inputs
  2. Reducing food spoilage and waste across the value chain
  3. Expanding the area under cultivation sustainably.
