Cooperation to promote agroforestry in Kerala

Collaborative projects to promote agroforestry options on farm homesteads are underway in the Indian State of Kerala.

The Hindu reports that the district Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) under the Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) and the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) have begun developing an action plan to enhance public awareness on the benefits of agroforestry. This could see KVK providing advice on crop management techniques and ICFRE helping with tree management technologies.

Such technologies can help to develop “a healthy and sustainable model of homestead agroforestry,” says the article. Agroforestry has an important role in suppling fuel, fodder, fertilizer and medicines.
