Conservation agriculture is helping communities in Iraq increase crop productivity, profitability and sustainability.
The website of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) reports on a recent training course for extension workers on the practices of conservation agriculture, which include zero-tillage, stubble mulching, improved crop cultivars and better crop management of wheat, barley, pulses and forage legumes.
Dr. Asma Zuhair Younes Al-Hafdh from the Department of Extension at the University of Mosul has also been teaching the next generation of farmers in the drylands of northern Iraq that ploughing the soil is not necessary to grow a successful crop.
