Combating soil erosion in Uganda with agroforestry

Uganda’s Daily Monitor reports on a tree planting project to control soil erosion and silting on Lake Bunyonyi and wetlands in Kabale District.

The project will promote agroforestry not only to combat degradation but also to improve food security and income for local communities. It involves planting trees with medicinal values, digging trenches and creating terraces.

The work, which is being implemented by a local NGO, Hort-Consult in partnership with Irish-based Gorta will control soil erosion on the highlands adjacent to Lake Bunyonyi and Rushebeya-Kanyabaha Wetland in Rukiga County which are the water source for the Kisizi mini-hydro power dam.
