Vietnam is now the world’s biggest coffee exporter. Insiders say they now need to improve the country’s reputation for quality coffee.
An article on the Voice of America website reports that almost all of the coffee exported from Vietnam is robusta; a lower quality, higher caffeine variety used to make espresso and instant coffee.
Dang Le Nguyen, Chairman of Vietnam's largest coffee company, Trung Nguyen, says they need to improve their packaging, display and storytelling. His company is marketing unique coffee products and working with its coffee farmers to try and improve quality and efficiency.
The growing of coffee and coffee culture in Vietnam was introduced by the French but it is only in recent years that the industry has begun to boom.
Le Ngoc Bau, director of Vietnam's Western Highlands Agroforestry Scientific and Technical Institute, warns that Vietnam will not remain the world’s biggest coffee exporter with no government plans to expand the area under coffee. But those inside the industry believe that while exports may level off, they can still work on improving quality.
