Engaging women in actions to adapt to and mitigate climate change is the subject of a report by the Rainforest Alliance on the recent UN climate talks, posted on the website, Sustainable Brands.
“When it comes to one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century — combating climate change — women are too often left out of the conversation altogether,” says the article.
During the COP19 climate talks in Poland emphasis was placed on how to involve women in climate-smart agriculture which aims to sustainably increase agricultural productivity while building resilience to climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
During the Global Landscapes Forum, a ‘Gender Café’ was held and 19 November was declared ‘Gender Day. In addition, a side event organized by the World Agroforestry Centre included a presentation by Sheila Sisulu, deputy executive director for Hunger Solutions at the World Food Programme. Sisulu stressed how discussions on climate-smart agriculture must include women who produce 80 per cent of the food consumed in Africa.
