Climate experts to debate research in forestry, landscapes and sustainability

Six thought leaders on climate will put forward their ideas on how to change the future by challenging the present during a scientific debate as part of Climate Week in New York on 24 September 2014.

The topics and speakers are:

  • Fresh approaches to resolving energy supply problems – John Holdren (TBC), Assistant to the President for Science and Technology; Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
  • The power of climate information to guide lasting solutions – Carlos Nobre, National Secretary for R&D Policies, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Brazil.
  • Thinking beyond the forestry–agriculture nexus to reduce climate stresses - Cheryl Palm, Director of Research at Agriculture and Food Security Center, Columbia University; Deputy Director of Vital Signs Africa.
  • Achieving economic development by valuing natural capital and environmental services - Pushpam Kumar, Professor in Environmental Economics, University of Liverpool; Chief, Ecosystem Services Economics Unit, UNEP.
  • Transformative approaches to governance reform - Eduardo Brondízio, Professor of Anthropology, Adjunct Professor of Environmental Sciences, Indiana University; Science Committee, Future Earth.
  • New frontiers for interdisciplinary science - Daniel Nepstad, Executive Director of the Earth Innovation Institute; a lead author of the IPCC Fifth Assessment.

The event is being organized by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and the Earth Institute at Columbia University.
