Climate change the focus of status report on African agriculture

The 2014 Africa Agriculture Status Report is expected to focus on the effects of climate change on smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa and how climate smart agriculture can increase productivity, address food insecurity and build resilience.

An article in SeedQuest reports on a recent meeting of experts from across the agricultural value chain to discuss the content of the upcoming report. In 2013 the first such report was released with information and data to assist policy makers in developing suitable policies to foster agriculture in Africa.

The report will be launched on 2 September 2014 at the Alliance for a Green Revolution Forum in Ethiopia. Among the authors are scientists from the World Agroforestry Centre and experts from AGRA, the World Bank, Food Agriculture Organization (FAO), CGIAR, the private sector, development community and universities.

“You cannot eliminate poverty without addressing food insecurity in Africa, said Dr Ademola Braimoh, World Bank’s Senior Natural Resources Management Specialist, at the meeting. “To address food insecurity you must address climate change because climate change will affect agriculture.”
