Centre research on track and making a difference

After its first full year of operation, the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Research Program on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry has achieved some impressive results.

An article on the International Institute for Sustainable Development website highlights some of the successes reported by the research program, including work of the World Agroforestry Centre in establishing rural resource centers that have increased local awareness of agroforestry options and increased the planting of high value trees.

In Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and Senegal, farmer-managed natural regeneration has increased tree cover and improved farmer income.

Overall, the research program has reached 72 per cent of its research outputs, selected four priority 'sentinel landscapes’, completed its monitoring, evaluation and impact assessment strategy and launched its gender strategy.

The report highlights progress and outcomes under each of research programs’ themes: production systems and markets; conservation and development; landscape management; climate change adaptation and mitigation; trade and investment; and cross-cutting themes, including sentinel landscapes and gender.
