A combination of sandy soils across and a barren hill on the eastern side of Matemanga village in Traditional Authority (TA) Mtwalo’s area in Mzimba north east means no matter how they toil in their fields, people there would not get the amount of harvest they desire. Rains in this area come sporadically. When the sporadic rains come mildly, the sandy soil easily sees the rain water sink through it leaving no moisture for, mainly, the maize crop to strive on.
