In a move to further boost agroforestry in the East Indian State of Bihar, foresters and forest guards are being trained in agroforestry, land management, nursery and plantation techniques.
An article in The Daily Pioneer outlines how participants in the training program, organized by the Forest Research Institute (FRI), heard of the high potential for agroforestry in Bihar.
FRI Director, PP Bhojvaid explained how agroforestry could improve the economy of farmers while maintaining balance in the ecosystem. But to effectively apply agroforestry on farmland requires awareness and technical know-how, he said.
Bhojvaid believes that if wood-based industries such as plywood factories are established in the State, there will be employment opportunities for youth and farmers will receive a proper price for their agroforestry produce.
He said that agroforestry would be more beneficial if products are made from locally procured and markets for the products are developed locally.
