Ambitious agroforestry project announced for Panama

The ‘Alliance for 1 Million’ reforestation project in Panama aims to promote sustainable socioeconomic growth, combat climate change and enhance the value of ecosystems through agroforestry.

The Working Forest newspaper reports on the new initiative which will see 1 million hectares of land reforested over 20 years. The intention is to “realize the sustainable development potential of Panama’s forestry sector, help meet its commitment to reduce emissions (by capturing an estimated 7 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year), and gain the support necessary to protect the nation’s extensive forest areas and rich biodiversity,” says the article.

A core element of the project is the development of livelihood alternatives through agroforestry and the sustainable management of natural forests. To facilitate this, a new forestry law will be developed that will define forest land management best practices and promote a National Forestry Development Plan.

It is hoped the initiative will help to create employment opportunities and increase exports as well as attracting investment in Panama’s forestry sector.

The project is an alliance between Panama’s Association for the Conservation of Nature (ANCON), the Panama Association for Reforestation (ANARAP) and the Panama Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (CCIAP).
