Agroforestry has been announced as a top priority for the Central Indian State of Chhattisgarh to alleviate poverty and provide an alternative source of income for forest dwellers.
The Daily Pioneer reports that the forest department has been directed by Chief Secretary, Vivek Dhand, to develop an action plan for agroforestry under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA).
According to Dhand, the state’s vast forest resources can be utilized in a productive way for improving the financial condition of forest dweller villagers. He outlined how the indigenous people of Bastar and Sarguja have land that is particularly suitable for agroforestry which could help them to generate additional income.
