Reforestation and agroforestry projects in Jamaica will receive $30 million in funding over the next year to enhance biodiversity conservation in the Stephney-John’s Vale Forest Reserve.
Jamaica Information Service reports that under the Jamaica Rural Economy and Ecosystems Adapting to Climate Change (Ja REEACH) programmes, local communities will receive training and support in agroforestry to improve their livelihoods.
It is expected that 200 hectares will be reforested and new forest management plans developed with extensive stakeholder involvement.
Already 3,000 timber and 3,000 fruit tree (coconut, apple and June plum) seedlings have been distributed and 4 demonstration plots are being established.
The project is being funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
