Agroforestry encouraged to take pressure off India's natural forests

Agroforestry can take pressure off India’s natural forests by providing fuel, fodder and timber, says an article in The Pioneer which reports on a recent training program organized by the Forest Research Institute.

The training focused on the development of agroforestry in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana states. According to the Institute’s Director, Dr PP Bhojvaid, there is great scope for agroforestry in these areas to boost farmers’ incomes, generate employment and ensure ecological balance.

The training involved government officials, representatives from NGOs, joint forest management committee members and a range of other stakeholders. The aim is to improve awareness, knowledge and skills in the area of agroforestry.
