Agroforestry can take pressure off Indian forests

With forest resources in India under pressure from continued exploitation, agroforestry can help to provide fuel, fodder and timber.

The Pioneer reports how this message was emphasized during a training workshop for farmers in the state of Bihar on agroforestry and land management.

“By planting trees outside forests, the economy of farmers may be improved and ecological balance in nature may be established,” says the article.

The state of Bihar has great potential for agroforestry, according to Dr PP Bhojvaid, Director of the Forest Research Centre. He called for the government to support the establishment of industries such as plywood factories that would support farmers in agroforestry and generate employment.
