In a new broadcast on Irish national radio RTÉ1, world-renowned agricultural, policy and development experts share their thoughts on how to strike the balance between free trade, food security and sustainable development.
The experts, including former World Bank president Robert Zoellick, were in Brussels on 5 March 2013 for the 6th Forum for the Future of Agriculture. The annual Forum is organized by the European Landowners' Organization (ELO) and Syngenta, and has since March 2008 brought together experts from industry, government, NGOs, UN agencies and academia to debate the future of agriculture and food production, particularly in the European context.
Within the 40-minute RTÉ1 radio feature that delves into biotechnology, GMOs, fertilizer use, social justice and various related topics, agroforestry and agroecology are highlighted as being cost-effective and ecologically benign avenues to produce more on the same amount of land, i.e. to achieve sustainable intensification of agricultural productivity.
