A scientific approach to agroforestry will help farmers become self-reliant and improve their incomes, says Chandra Durgapal, Labour and Dairy Development Minister Harish for the Indian State of Uttarakhand.
The Daily Pioneer reports on an address given by Durgapal at the recent forest science fair in Lalkuan. The Minister believes that growing fruit and fodder species in forests will help to prevent wild animals from entering human settlements and farms in search of food.
He called for farmers to work with forest departments on social forestry and to increase the planting of oak and deodar (a type of cedar) in mountainous regions.
