Agriculture on the up in East Africa

Agriculture is experiencing upward growth in East Africa, says an article in All Africa, due to public-private collaboration, youth involvement and the gaining momentum of agribusiness.

Aiding the sector have been forums that involve regional and international stakeholders examining issues that are critical to improving agriculture, such as developing common standards, sharing technical expertise, developing infrastructure and promoting trade.

In March 2014 the CGIAR held their biannual board meeting in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, bringing together agricultural experts from around the world.

"Sub-Saharan Africa is one of the most vulnerable regions where a majority of people are smallholder farmers who frequently face food insecurity and poverty," said Dr Rijsberman, CEO of the CGIAR.

CGIAR Centers, including the World Agroforestry Centre, are active in a range of agricultural research initiatives in Tanzania, together with national and international partners. The article summarizes contributions of CGIAR Centers to agricultural development in Tanzania and the East Africa region.
